Friday Night Ballroom Dance

There is Ballroom Dancing every Friday Night at The Dance Space from 8pm to 10:30.  It is open to the public and is $8.00 per person.   Included is a group class from 8pm to 8:30 followed by general dancing until 10:30.  Check out or Dance Events page for details.


Monthly Dances

The Dance Space holds a number of monthly dance parties.  Every Sunday night there is a dance from 7pm to 9pm.  On the 1st and 3rd Sundays Bill & Lynn Irwin host a Ballroom Dance featuring contemporary ballroom favorites.  On the 2nd Sunday evening of every month, DJ Bill holds a California Mix Dance, featuring a lineup of dances with Club Flair like West Coast Swing, Hustle, Nightclub Two Step, Club Tango and a Latin mix.  At 7pm on the 4th Sunday evening DJ Bill comes back with a Ballroom and Country Western Mix Dance.  When a month has a 5th Saturday, The Dance Space hosts a special 5th Saturday Showcase Dance.  This is an enjoyable evening of Ballroom dancing from 7:30pm to 10:00 pm, which includes amateur and professional ballroom exhibitions.  Every 4th Saturday The Dance Space hosts the Hottest Salsa party in town. There is a 30 minute beginner lesson at 8, followed by dancing until midnight. All dances are open to the public.


Ballroom Dance Instruction

The Dance Space offers a full range of Ballroom Dancing Group Lessons open to the public.  Classes range from Beginner I, for people who have never been on a dance floor, to Intermediate II, for people dancing Ballroom on a regular basis.  Lessons cover all the ballroom/latin/club dances (Foxtrot, Waltz, Rumba, Cha Cha, Salsa, etc).  Come join the fun for low cost and no commitment.  

The Dance Space also offers specialty ballroom dance classes such as our Ballroom Intermediate Series presented by Michael Strahan, our Saturday Morning Workshop by Phyllis Harris and Ron Marchal and our Argentine Tango Workshop presented by Barry and Ann Kahan.  Salsaleros can attend our weekly, Monday evening Salsa Series, or our Saturday Salsa 1-on-1 and More Workshop presented by Ashton Feliciano.   The Richmond Area Swing Society (RASS) has a beginner lesson at 7:30 every 1st Saturday of the month, and The Usual Lindy Suspects has a beginner Lindy lesson at 7:30 on the 2nd Saturday of the month.

Saturday Night Swing Dance and Other Dance Events

The Dance Space hosts a variety of Ballroom and non-Ballroom dance events. There is a Swing Dance (including "Intro to Swing" group class) starting at 7:30pm on the 1st and 2nd Saturday night.  Check out our Dance Events page for details.

How to get to The Dance Space

Our address is 6004-A West Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23230.

The Dance Space is located in the "near west end" of Richmond, VA on West Broad Street.  We are about a mile east of the intersection of Interstate 64 and Broad Street (near Glenside Drive).  We are located in the second floor of a small shopping center, on the north side of Broad Street, which is half way between the lights at Horsepen Road and Libbie Avenue.  Our front door can be found between the Mekong Restaurant and Banner Express.

Welcome to The Dance Space

The Dance Space is a dance facility run by Bill and Lynn Irwin.   We have been open since April of 1992 and we are dedicated to promoting Ballroom dance in the Richmond, VA metropolitan area.  We have a 1,600 square foot wooden dance floor and state-of-the-art sound system that is used for regularly scheduled dance events and instruction.

We are not a dance studio in the traditional sense.  The Dance Space is a facility that is used in the following ways:
  • Holding public Ballroom Dances on a regular basis
  • Providing public Ballroom Dance Group Lessons on a regular basis for both non-dancers and experienced dancers
  • Rental of floor space to independent professional ballroom dance instructors for both private and group instruction
  • Rental of floor space to established amateur and professional dance organizations for dances, classes and other events
Dance Space News

Classes for Newcomers - Saturdays at Noon
On January 7th, Phyllis Harris starts a new series of classes geared specifically to newcomers. These 45 minute classes are just $7, so they won't overwhelm you or you wallet. Classes will begin at 12 noon each Saturday, right after her intermediate class. Here is the line-up for January:

  Jan 7th  - WC Swing 6 Count Basics
  Jan 14th - WC Swing 8 Count Basics
  Jan 21st - Night Club 2 Step
  Jan 28th - Social Argentine Tango

Beginner & Intermediate 20s Charleston
On Thursday, January 5th, John Ennis begins two new 20s Charleston series. The first, at 7pm, is Intermediate 20s Charleston. Then at 8pm John will be teaching Beginning 20s Charleston. Both classes are three week series.

Salsa Classes Return on Monday, Jan 9th!
Clara Toro starts a new four week beginner series (7-8 pm), and Gio continues with his Advance Beginner/Intermediate classes (8-9 pm).
